Day 184 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ West Tile Floor

Here is more of the original tile floor found in our lobby. This particular section can be found in the west part of the lobby between the kitchen of Q's Restaurant and the office of our General Manager, Sid Anderson.

Day 144 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Mr. Anderson

So obviously this photo is a bit different from the others so far in the 365 Days of Boulderado Photos series, because this is the first photo of a person as opposed to an object or piece of the building. But in all fairness, our General Manager, Sid Anderson (seen here) has been running the Hotel Boulderado since the late 1970s. And today is his birthday! Happy Birthday, Mr. Anderson!

Day 18 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Boulderado Shaving Cup

We found this cup a few years ago when we were doing some spring cleaning behind the Mezzanine bar. Our General Manager, Sid Anderson, believes it was used in the barber shop to hold the brushes. You can see this shaving cup today in the display box at the Hotel Boulderado's south entrance.

Day 15 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Lobby Grandfather Clock

This grandfather clock stands watch in the Hotel Boulderado lobby just to the left of the front desk. It still keeps terrific time thanks to a daily winding from our General Manager, Sid Anderson. I always know when Mr. Anderson take a vacation because the grandfather clock chimes on the wrong hour.

Videos from the Oral History Luncheon

Back in September of 2008, the Hotel Boulderado hosted a luncheon in our Spruce Room. We invited a variety of people from the community to come in, sit down, and share a memory of the Hotel Boulderado. Here's a rundown of who we talked to and what they had to say:
  • Dee Demmon remembers dancing in the lobby and getting her spiked heels caught in the tile floor
  • Sandy Hume recollects his impressions of the original stained-glass ceiling -- "It contained every color in heaven."
  • Don Hume tells stories of his visits to the Boulderado as a young child
  • Betty Chronic shares what led to her first visit to the Boulderado dining room
  • Virginia Patterson's connections to Boulderado weddings and the old barber shop
  • June Howard remembers what it was like running the hotel in the 1960s, with her husband, Ed
  • Gwen Winterberger and her husband, Louis, ran the hotel in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and Gwen took some time to call us and share some memories
  • Dick Dorman recalled his involvement with restoring the stained-glass ceiling
  • Frank and Gina Day, our current owners, remember how their relationship with the Boulderado began
  • Sidney Anderson, our current general manager, and his impact on the hotel
  • Laurel McKown tells us how she was hired to restore, photograph, and catalog the Boulderado's extensive collection of antique furniture
  • Sandy Hale shares the multitude of parties she threw at the hotel
  • Mary Ann Mahoney recalls the opening of the North Wing and the new meetings market it served
  • Silvia Pettem shares her experiences as the Hotel Boulderado historian
  • Dan Corson remembers when the hotel was named a historic landmark
  • Dorothy Sage recollects a memorable holiday tea at the Hotel Boulderado

Mr. Anderson's Office

Last week, when our office went to sing "Happy Birthday" to Mr. Anderson and bring him his German chocolate cake, I was reminded again how interesting his office it. The walls are covered in archival photos and newspaper clippings from the hotel's earliest history, including the Daily Camera article from January 1, 1909 regailing readers with details about the previous night's Open House.

Mr. Anderson's Office

But without a doubt, my favorite piece in Mr. Anderson's office is the window. When the Hotel Boulderado originally opened in 1909, the dining room was fitted with hand-crafted stained-glass windows. The only surviving window today is located in Mr. Anderson's office.

My other favorite item in his office is actually outside his office. Mr. Anderson used to work in an office on the second floor that used to be room 212. (Guestrooms on the mezzanine level were removed in the 1970s to create offices and the Mezzanine Lounge. Stay tuned to the blog for a future post detailing this process!) Original brass room number plaques were replaced with ceramic versions, including 212. When Mr. Anderson moved down to his office on the first floor, he brought the ceramic room number with him.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Anderson!

Respectfully wishing a very happy birthday to the Hotel Boulderado's General Manager, Sid Anderson, today. Mr. Anderson has been involved with the Boulderado for over 30 years, most of that time as the General Manager and has become famous among employees for his dress code, complete with suspenders and a bow tie. His sharp memory and attention to detail have kept much of the Boulderado history accurate among the younger members of the staff. Happy Birthday, Mr. Anderson! I'm sure our office will be serenading you to this effect later today!
