Recapping the Seasons at the Hotel Boulderado

Whew! 365 days of photographing and blogging sure takes a lot of you. To give myself some time to rest, and to share a cool result of the 365 project, I wanted to do one blog post showing the exterior shots taken through different seasons. On the first of each month, I took a photo of the hotel from the same street corner at about the same time of day. These are the results.

Day 338 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Exterior in February

With this photo, I'm beginning to feel things start to come full circle in this 365 Days project. On the first day of each month since March, I have been taking a photo of the Hotel Boulderado from the same spot at about the same time of day, to show the different seasons, weather, and light that the Boulderado greets each day.

Day 276 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Exterior in December

Baby, it's cold outside! I'm glad it snowed this morning so you can see the hotel like this. If you look very closely, you can see some of the Christmas lights still glowing in the early morning light.

Day 263 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ 1960s South Entrance

I've decided to show you some old photos from the hotel's collection over the next couple of days. This photograph, provided by June Howard, is of the hotel's south entrance from the early 1960s. There are two items in this photo of the hotel that no longer are there -- the stone portico structure over the south entrance, and the neon sign on the roof.

Day 246 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Exterior in November

Happy November! We're expecting some snow all across the state today, which is why the background is so gray and cloudy. You can see all the leaves have dropped off the trees out front, and we're cleaning up the inside from Halloween and preparing for the holiday rush.

Day 215 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Exterior in October

Check out that beautiful blue sky! This is the Hotel Boulderado at the dawn of a new month, October. The leaves have been falling off our tree steadily, and the shadows are reaching farther than before.

Day 201 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Ivy Tower

Whenever I approach the Hotel Boulderado from the north and I reach this corner of the building, I never fail to mistake the hotel for some ivy-encrusted tower of a magnificent castle.

Day 160 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ West Exterior with Ivy

This is a shot of the Hotel Boulderado's exterior on the west side of the building, which, as you can see, has a healthy ivy plant crawling its way up.

Day 154 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Exterior in August

Blue skies are back in this exterior shot of the Hotel Boulderado. I also love the bright yellow taxi waiting outside for a guest pickup, not to mention the window on the east side that is entirely encircled with ivy.

Day 133 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Historic Section Exterior Bricks

What you are seeing here is a close up of the bricks making up the exterior of the Historic Section of the Hotel Boulderado. The material for the bricks was brought from a quarry in northern Colorado. At the time that the Boulderado was being built (1906-1908), Boulder was full of brickyards, so the material was pressed into bricks and then laid on the foundation.

Day 123 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Exterior in July

Even though the Fourth of July is still a few days away, we are showing our spirit with red, white, and blue bunting both inside and outside of the Hotel Boulderado.

Day 93 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Exterior in June

I'm willing to bet that the forecasted temperature in the 90s today will burn off that morning overcast coverage, but in the meantime, you can see all our trees bursting with green finery.

Day 79 of 365 Days of Boulderado Photos ~ Balconies

Here are some balconies seen on the Hotel Boulderado's south side of the Historic Section, just above the Spruce Street entrance. They were never functional, rather ornamental. Ornate iron balconies like this were popular with Victorians who loved embodying the neo-classical, Italianate styles in their daily life, hence why they were included in the architecture for our Victorian era hotel.
